what are varicose veins?
Varicose veins are superficial veins under the skin that can become enlarged and twisted, usually due to weak vein walls and valves. They vary from small spider veins of blue, purple, and red to larger, bulging veins of green and blue.
This condition affects approximately 50% of females and 20% of males and can result in constantly aching, tired legs.
For many, varicose and spider veins are simply a cosmetic concern. However, for others, varicose veins can progress to cause aching pain and discomfort. Sometimes varicose veins can lead to more serious problems. If left untreated, varicose veins may progress to swelling, ulceration, and undesired pigmentation.
We offer various treatments such as: Schlerotherapy, Foam Echosclerotherapy and Compression Stockings.

Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy involves an injection of a solution directly into the compromised vein(s). The solution irritates the lining of the blood vessel, causing it to collapse and stick together and the blood to clot. Over time, the vessel turns into scar tissue that fades from view.
Foam Echosclerotherapy
An injection of medication turned into a “microfoam” with a method using medication and xenon gas to create a dense foam that is administered to larger turquoise veins (reticulars) or saphenous veins, which are not always visible, but feed other surface veins.
The actual procedure takes 10 – 15 minutes not counting preparation and post procedure instructions. We use a hydraulic bed for the correct positioning. Once the correct vein has been located using the ultrasound, a small amount of local anaesthetic may be put under your skin using a fine needle and a small catheter will be introduced into the offending saphenous veins, in most cases this is not necessary, the procedure is usually painless. Once the correct position is assured, the foam sclerosant will be introduced into the vein and guided to the junction of the vein.

what to expect
Starting with a Vein Consultation, our team will go over your medical history and conduct a brief information session so that you understand your treatment options. Our Physician and Nurse will then perform a physical examination of your legs assisted with a venous Doppler ultrasound for in-depth vein mapping. A Doppler ultrasound is a noninvasive procedure that uses sound waves to look at blood flow through the valves in the veins. After this, you'll be given an accurate diagnosis and a proposed custom treatment plan.
What happens after injections?
After treatment, we recommend that you go for a brisk 30 minute walk around the block before leaving the clinic and resuming your daily activities. If you have a long drive home, please plan frequent breaks to stretch.
We advise you to wear your compression stocking(s) for 10-14 days post treatment. Stockings may be removed at bedtime for comfort.
What can I expect after treatment?
For small sclerotherapy injections, you can expect temporary stinging and some bruising. After foam echosclerotherapy of larger veins, you might have cramping or heaviness along the course of the vein. On occasion, you will have redness and warmth along the treated vein. This is called phlebitis and is caused by blood and medication being trapped in the treated vein. Please call us if you experience this and are concerned.
Veins may also feel lumpy and look bruised. This is a normal side effect of treatment. Ice can be applied to tender areas for the first 48 hours then warm compresses after 48 hours. We can also prescribe you an anti-inflammatory gel to apply. A manual drainage of these lumpy areas may need to be performed with local anesthetics for comfort and more pleasing cosmetic results.
Please take showers instead of hot baths and no hot tubs at first.
Sometimes the skin remains brown over the treated vein but in most cases, it will slowly fade, be patient!
Can I exercise after treatment?
Please do! Exercising everyday will make your treatments more effective. Wear your compression stockings while exercising and don’t do anything too traumatic to the treatment areas. Please ask the Nurse or Doctor if you're unsure to maximize treatment outcome.
Are there any possible complications?
Despite our detailed history and exam, there is always the possibility of an allergic reaction ranging from hives and mild itching to an anaphylactic reaction. We have emergency medical equipment on hand to assist you in the event of a mild to severe reaction.
Exceptionally rare cases of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolus have been reported in medical literature. (PLEASE TELL US IF YOU SMOKE AND/OR TAKE HORMONES OR THE BIRTH CONTROL PILL).
There are two other RARE accidental complications that may arise from the sclerosing agent spilling into the subcutaneous tissue or introduced into an arteriole. Either could result in an ulcer and that would eventually leave a scar. Please call us with any concerns or questions.
